Kampala: Ugandan military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has warned of possible military action in Bunia, a town in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), if armed groups fail to surrender within 24 hours.
The warning, issued on the social media platform X on Saturday, demands that “all forces” in the area lay down their weapons immediately.
General Kainerugaba, who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, stated that he is acting under his father's orders. He claims the move is aimed at protecting the Bahima ethnic community, whom he says are under attack. “Bunia will soon be in UPDF hands,” he declared, referring to the Uganda People's Defence Force.
The Ugandan military officials has not yet commented on this statement.
Kainerugaba has a history of making controversial remarks on social media. In 2022, he threatened to invade Kenya, and he has previously posted inflammatory comments about Ugandan opposition figures, including Kizza Besigye and Bobi Wine.
